Background and Objectives: Intratympanic injection of steroid showed improvement of cochlear function in various inner ear diseases. We performed a prospective study to evaluate the therapeutic response and the complications of intratympanic steroid injection accompanying combination therapy with systemic steroid in the patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL).
Materials and Method: Twenty-one patients with SSNHL who received combination therapy with systemic steroid and intratympanic steroid injection were included. The changes of hearing levels, tinnitus and complications of intratympanic steroid injection were evaluated.
Result: Hearing improvement rate according to Siegel¡¯s classification showed more than 90%; complete recovery in 42.9%, partial and incomplete recoveries in 14.3% and 33.3% respectively. Otalgia after intratympanic steroid injection was serially decreased.
Conclusion: Intratympanic steroid injection accompanying combination therapy with systemic steroid administration in the patients with SSNHL in the early stage of hearing loss might be considered as a good treatment modality. Further case-control study to prove its objective therapeutic efficacy will be necessary.
